St Mary's Catholic Primary School

‘One family united in Christ to be the best we can be’

Class 4 (Year 5)

Welcome to Class 4

Welcome to Class 4 with Mr. Holmes and Mr. Green. Here you will find out some information about our timetable and class expectations. This year, our topics include topic is Keep Clam and Carry On, Tomb Raiders and Jungle Fever. This year we have some exciting trips and activities planned, this includes the blitz, learning a modern foreign language, space and a trip to the Coventry Cathedral and more.

In Year five, the children will receive math's and English homework every Friday.  We expect homework to be completed on time and returned by the following Thursday. Homework is designed to consolidate learning and provide children with an opportunity to practice key skills. Most children should be able to complete it independently. We do expect the homework to be completed to the same standard as the work in class.

I very much look forward to the year ahead and to working with parents/carers and the pupils of class four to make this a very special year at St Mary's.

It is expected that your child reads for at least 15 minutes per day.  The importance and value of reading regularly are enormous.  Your child will take an Accelerated Reader Test to establish their reading level and will then choose books from the school library at the appropriate level.  Once the book is finished, they will complete a Star Reader test to assess their comprehension of what they have read.  When the children reach a certain level, they are able to select books from home to read, or from the school library.

Homework will recap the key skills being learnt that week as well as reinforcing the core arithmetic skills.

English – grammar and punctuation

Questions will recap key skills that the children should know and will also link to what we have covered in class.

The children will have weekly spellings to practice at home. Spellings will be tested on a Thursday.

Times Tables

These should be practiced regularly.  Having a secure knowledge of the times tables up to 12x12 as well as the corresponding division facts helps considerably with the rest of the year five's math's curriculum and in the speed at which calculations can be completed.  Your child has a login to TT Rockstars where they can practice.

General reminders.

  • PE: Lessons will be taught on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons this term; please can you ensure that your child comes to school in their full PE uniform on these days and that earing's are either removed by the child for lessons or not worn on PE days. Staff cannot remove children's earing's
  • Pencil Cases: Children will not need a pencil case. We have everything they need in class.
  • Water bottles: Please ensure that your child brings a named water bottle in each day
  • Snacks: Please ensure that snacks are healthy and nutritious. Please see our snack guidance for clarification.
  • Homework: This will be set on a Friday; this includes spellings, and the children will then be tested on these on the following Thursday morning.

Please feel free to contact me on Seesaw with any questions or queries. I am really looking forward to teaching your children this year and feel privileged to teach them.

Seesaw is a communication platform for teaching and learning. All other communication should be sent via the school office for the attention of the staff member.

Kind regards

Mr. Holmes
